Grab Roles! Learn Hidden Secret of How to "Cheat" on Camera

By on 8:43:00 AM
A classical example of "cheating out" camera

A classical example of how "cheating out" done on camera-Arjun Rampal and Esha Gupta in Chakravyuh.

Cheating Out

Sometimes while shooting under the camera, to show a scene with conflict, an adjustment in position, look, or movement of the actor for the sake of the camera's perspective or movement grips the viewers for a better outcome.
Youre engrossed in an intense on camera dialogue with another actor. You want the scene to play as realistically as possible, so you face each other as you speak, staring intently into each others eyes. On the other hand, you know theres an audience watching. How do you make sure the audience in a cinema hall or watching TV serial get to see your face instead of having to watch your profile for the whole scene?
This is an example of when cheating out comes in handy. Its a performance technique that helps maintain the illusion that the characters are totally committed to the on-camera action, but at the same time giving their performance looking and playing out towards the audience.

Look to learn

Look at the above picture carefully. In an intense scene, instead of looking directly into the eyes of co-actor, Arjun Rampal is gazing in front towards viewers (camera).

A skilled actor can cheat out so subtly that you may not even notice. Each time a male or a female actor begins to speak, you might see her looking directly at their interlocutor (another actor who takes part in a dialogue or conversation). Then the first actor pivots slightly out towards the audience, only to turn back again just as his/her line of dialogue comes to an end.
In some situations the actors perform full out, meaning that they turn to speak most of their lines directly to the audience. Sometimes called presentational style, this often works for comedy. Mostly applied for theater

To make it absolutely simple-

Cheat out- To 'cheat' is to turn your face or entire body either out towards camera to be seen better without completely turning (so it still looks natural, but you are not completely in profile) or to face into camera to conceal something.

Poor Voice? Build Fast to Win Auditions | 16 Easy Steps

By on 2:24:00 AM
Great acting voice actors of Bollywood Amitabh Bachchan and Arjun Rampal
Great Bollywood Actors Amitabh Bachchan and Arjun Rampal who developed their voice beyond imagination
"What an impressive personality! Great acting techniques! But, unfortunately the moment he opened his mouth Im sorry Kiran, well he has a weak voice which clouded all his other strong points. The character in the story required a strong voice as well.. And the casting director looked at me with his raised eyebrows!

This happened long back at the beginning of my career as an acting coach. The day taught me a lesson which I dont think I will ever forget. I now make a point in my training lessons to devote sufficient time to voice development

Voice is God Gifted, yes, it's true and a fact, but it can be trained, this also a fact. Nobody is a born singer or narrator or voice artiste, yes, he/she may have a sweet, melodious voice of birth, but still his/her voice needs to be trained enough to modulate, varied and able to perform professionally for required time

Speech is a very powerful tool and it can assist an actor in achieving objectives in a scene or the whole production. Think about some of the great actors of the time like Late Raj Kumar, Late Murad and his son Raza Rurad, Nana Patekar, Late Amrish Puri to name few of Indian Actors blessed with a golden voice.

Today, a Bollywood or a TV serial casting director is an extremely busy and  tired guy on a typical audition day where he has to audition hundreds of actors for a character. Obviously, he/she further may get put off with many of the poor performances. Actors can get stuck with emotions and actions, but they forget that our voice is so important. A good voice is one of the dominant factor, plays a significant role in getting yourself registered in a casting directors mind and may keep you ahead in getting the dream role.

Do you have a thin, shrill, faint, low or muffled voice? Do you mix words or speak too fast?
Here are exercises which will do wonders to your voice.

Like what a singer does every morning called "Riyaaz" (practice) you should do these exercises every morning or evening before dinner.

1. Keep your thumbs on your chin. Open mouth. Stretch your tongue out and massage your tongue with both index fingers making loud sound (3 minutes)
2. Keep your index fingers in front and close to your ears and open and close your mouth, making a loud sound (3 minutes)

3. Make loud funny sounds shaking your head

4. Yawn repeatedly making a sound

5. Say HUM from a lower to highest pitch. Try 8 different pitches

6. Make "Burr" sound repeatedly at different sound levels

7. You can take "Sa" only of Sa Re Ga Ma and then take a deep breath by mouth, not the nose, and start reciting "Sa" with your full bass voice (the lowest vocal range of all voice types.) till your quality breath comes to a decline level. Stop deliberately. There is no use of unnecessary stretching of breath. Keep in mind you have to inhale from mouth, fully and should go on saying "Sa" till the end of your breath in a continuous pitch without any breaks, variation or modulation of your voice. This will not only help you in having a good base voice, but also increase your voicing stamina. Also, while speaking,  stretch the word OM into 2 parts O and M spreading the word OM till your breath ends.

8. Breathing: Inhale deeply, hold the breath and exhale very slowly (10 times). If possible, try to do this lying on a bed before sleep, keeping a book on your belly.

9. Breathing: Inhale deeply, hold the breath and exhale very slowly (10 times) making a hissing sound. If possible, try to do this lying on a bed before sleep, keeping a book on your belly.

10. Say or sing-
Sa  Re  Ga Ma  Pa  Dha  Nee  Sa
Sa  Re  Ga  Ma  Pa  Dha  Nee  Sa,  each word randomly with different pitch as shown above. Repeat different sound level for different words in the next. Continue (10 times).

11. Make Cracky door opening sound. Pitch differently

12. You should everyday practice at least one full length script with proper Hindi diction, pronunciation, modulation (as & when).  If you do not have the stamina you may lose your voice in a long script. Your voice may be bold, enthusiastic, and fresh in the first quarter of the script and may get tired or becomes low in the end. This is called the stamina of Voice, and it must remain uniform in quality (one) till the end.

13. Watch and listen carefully Hindi news with high volume on TV channels. Speak along with news anchor. Practice at least for 30 minutes, with different anchors.

14. Listen to carefully voice artists (background voices) in different commercial ads on TV. Speak along with them follow their spoken lines, overall quality.

Yoga plays a very important role in improving voice quality

16. One Yoga asana which is the most effective is Ujjayi Pranayama

Ujjayi Pranayama for voice improvements
Ujjayi Pranayama for voice improvements

It's very simple to practice:

  1. Sir in a comfortable position on a mat on a floor, preferably legs crossed
  2. Breath in and out in while contracting your throat, which will produce a sort of hissing sound in a rhythmic fashion
  3. However, while breathing do not extra strain to contract your throat
  4. Continue for 15 minutes

. A very effective way to exercise your throat.

Donts

  1. Stay away from alcohol and smoking, very cold ice creams, beverages, aerated waters, chocolates or pickles, chilies and anything very sour.
  2. If you eat occasionally do try to clear your throat and brush your teeth before sleeping.
  3. Gargle your throat with salted warm water. This is a must for an actor
  4. Do not shout that make your vocal chords vibrate so harshly that can be damaged.

Do You know 7 Best Acting Techniques of World to Be A Star?

By on 10:20:00 AM
Acting techniques
Acting techniques by legendary coaches

These are great techniques learnt and practiced by international actors who are legendary cinema superstar celebrities

The Objective

The objective of learning these techniques is to enrich and refine your craft of acting to stay ahead of fierce Bollywood competition

Konstantin Stanislavski

The Father of Acting Techniques
Konstantin Stanislavski (1863-1963) was a Russian director and actor. To this day, he is one of the most influential figures in world theater and has influenced dozens upon dozens of actors and teachers. The umbrella term for his series of techniques is called Stanislavski's system, and the most common chunk of the system is "The method Acting." This technique asks of the actor, "What would I do if I were in the character's situation?" Basically, if whatever circumstances of the scene were happening to YOU, how would you react? This question led to the analysis of motivation and objective, both of which have become so commonplace in the theater that they are no longer a style; they are theater basics. What would you do? Why would you do it?

Sandy Meisner
Sandy Meisner

Emphasis being placed on an actor's response to other people and circumstances, resulting in a specific behavior to produce an emotional, truthful performance without 'faking it'

Exercises designed by Meisner:
Repetition- "In this exercise, two actors sit across from each other and respond to each other through a repeated phrase. The phrase is about each other's behavior, and reflects what is going on between them at the moment, such as "You look unhappy with me right now." The way this phrase is said as it is repeated changes in meaning, tone and intensity to correspond with the behavior that each actor produces towards the other. Through this device, the actor stops thinking of what to say and do, and responds more freely and spontaneously, both physically and vocally. The exercise also eliminates line readings, since the way the actor speaks becomes coordinated with his behavioral response."

Alexander
Alexander

The Alexander Technique is a method that works to change (movement) habits in our everyday activities. It is a simple and practical method for improving ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and coordination. The technique teaches the use of the appropriate amount of effort for a particular activity, giving you more energy for all your activities. It is not a series of treatments or exercises, but rather a reeducation of the mind and body. The Alexander Technique is a method which helps a person discover a new balance in the body by releasing unnecessary tension. It can be applied to sitting, lying down, standing, walking, lifting, and other daily activities

Lee StrasbergLee Strasberg

The techniques consist of recalling the circumstances, physical and personal, surrounding an intense emotional experience in the actors past and then prepare the character in a story.
Strasberg required that an actor, when preparing for a role, studies (or creates) not only into the character's life in the script, but also, far more importantly, into the character's life before the situation existed at the beginning of the story (which is not mentioned in the script).
Personally, I do not consider Strassberg technique is relevant in contemporary acting for films, TV or commercials

Uta Hagen
Uta Hagen

Uta Hagen (1919-2004) was an American Broadway actress and drama teacher, born in Germany.
Hagen advised actors to learn as much as possible about the character, to research everything related to the character's world. She also devised a series of exercises designed to make the actor more aware of his or her surroundings and wrote lists of questions for actors to answer ("Who am I? Where am I? What do I want? What is in my way of getting what I want?" and others).
Hagen also stressed the importance of doing rather than just standing around. People don't just stand and wait, she said in an example- They fiddle with things. They talk to themselves. They study their environments. They watch people.
In a camera setting for a film, no one should just "wait" without some type of corresponding action. For example, if you are listening to what your Co-actor is talking to you, be curious, observe, understand and respond truthfully with your emotions and physical gestures (such as with your eyes only if you cannot move your other body parts)
Above all, Hagen spoke about honesty, making choices and actions not to "show" any acting but to truly be in the moment.

Stella Adler
Stella Adler

Stella Adler (Stanislavski disciple who studied alongside Strasberg at the Group Theatre in NY) went to Europe to study with Stanislavski, herself. Stanislavski was originally an advocate of depending on an actor's own memory experiences and substituting it to create a "character", but he realized that it was flawed.
Why? Over time, a memory can change. For example a memory that was once traumatized as a kid is now a silly memory. Stella said Strasberg was wrong and formed her branch of American Method. Her version focuses more on imagination and doesn't use past memory in actor's own past life and substitution in creating a "character". You use your imagination to be the character and create the environment. Robert DeNiro, and Marlon Brando were from this school.

Michael Chekhov
Michael Chekhov approach

Michael Chekhov was a student of Stanislavskys; his teaching focused on opening the subconscious through external, physical practice. As opposed to substituting ones own father for the father in a scene, or using affective memory to personalize the relationship, he advocated creating a fictional father through the use of archetype and imagination. He developed the Psychological Gesturea rehearsed confluence of the characters thoughts, feelings, and desires into a single expressive, physical gestureto align the senses quickly and with great potency.

Not in a "Character" on Camera? Causes, Result and Solution

By on 11:00:00 AM

Don't be afraid to play a character

Symptoms

  1. Forgetting your lines after the director says "Action"
  2. Not being in a "character" in a particular shot or in the entire scene
  3. The camera catches your gaze, wandering while your Co actor is talking to you
  4. Lack of necessary expressions while delivering your dialog
  5. Lack of required energy level in your performance
  6. Wrong movements (not hitting the mark while walking)
  7. Not using the props properly
  8. Getting stuck with speech, a word or speed

Causes

  • Lack of preparation (The reason could also be getting script/lines on the set)
  • Getting distracted with the activities on a set, which is always chaotic before a loud "quite" or "silence"
  • Gossiping with Co actors or crew before or after your shot when you may be having more shots remaining
  • Using your cell phone often

Consequences

  1. Wandering mind leading to lack of concentration and focus
  2. Poor performance
  3. Multiple retakes of a shot annoying director, producer, DP and crew members
  4. Earning a bad name of a "poor actor"
  5. Bad publicity and losing opportunities
  6. Shattered dreams of becoming a "Star"

Treatment (Solution)

  • Practice meditation
  • You have to give yourself strong auto suggestions, repeatedly
  • Practice concentration regularly by focusing your attention on a single object for as long as you can (lamp, table, pan etc.)

When distractions occur:

  • Take a deep breath, hold for 5 seconds and release it very slowly. Repeat this at least 5 times
  • Order your mind by saying "stop" or "stop wondering", Shake your head vigorously for a second and say again "back into", when you notice your mind wandering
  • Pinch your arm or thigh hard
  • Immediately shift your posture to an awkward one
  • Say to yourself repeatedly "I'm so and so" (Character)
  • Say to yourself positive things like "I can do it", "I will do it" or "I'm good, yes I'm good" to bring back your concentration
  • While on set avoid as far as possible what I have mentioned under "Causes". After all, your career is more important than gossiping, phoning or flirt around.
  • Speak  only what is relevant and required as a courtesy, on the set.

(However, this does not mean you do not clarify your doubts with a director or cameraman. For your flawless performance, you must ASK)
If you practice the above regularly, you will tune your mental instrument so well that over a period of time, you will learn to be in a character instantly, irrespective of distractions

Often Rejected at Auditions? Check These 16 Mistakes

By on 9:10:00 PM
Mistakes in auditions, observed by the author
Mistakes in auditions, observed by the author
Over the past many years, as an actor, I have given auditions and like other aspirants,  made mistakes. In the later years I became a short film maker and an acting coach. Consequently,  my functions made me to attend many auditions, be a keen observer and a learner. This helped me to select right talents for my films and develop my students better as a coach.
I observed that many of the aspiring actors unknowingly fall into some not-so-useful habits that undermine their ability to give an incredible audition and actually enjoy the process.

  1. Lack of commitment: if you dont believe in your performance, why should I?
  2. Poor choice in monologue (Genre, age, character, script, dialogues)
  3. Poor or no training, and it shows: lack of confidence is certainly a sign of limited experience and though practice in front of an audience: mirrors are great, but they are a poor substitute for an actual audience. We all need critique, a personal acting coach or even a roommate with little experience in theater can help you polish that audition piece!
  4. Trying to make friends with everyone in the waiting room and use it as a time to catch up with that guy you never really liked anyway who was in your acting class.
  5. Trying desperately to relax, without knowing the professional technique for relaxation.
  6. Trying to look calmer and more relaxed than everyone else. Looking at others with pseudo pride to find out how tense are they
  7. Acting your lines/scene in the waiting room this includes acting out planned facial responses ie. Surprise, Confusion, Anger looks over- involved.
  8. Ridiculing others who are mime, acting their scene. I would never do that
  9. Classifying other actors in the room by age, looks, and attitudes.
  10. After doing above placing yourself in a superior position.
  11. Criticizing yourself for being nervous.
  12. Start discussing with others about your the last role in Balaji serial or in the film directed by Anurag Basu so others will feel inferior causing them to hate you.
  13. Thinking about how much you hate having to wait. They gave me audition time as 6-40 evening and that was 27 minutes ago. Who do they think they are making me wait? Dont they know my background? That Im trained in Actors Prepares by Anupam Kher?
  14. Indulge in negativity: Ill never get this. Why am I here? Im leaving. Then you hear Preeti, youre next.
  15. Once inside the audition room: start with a funny line or a sudden Hello, how are you guys? Follow this up with your embarrassed laugh at your own joke. Meanwhile the casting people have been chatting about what to order for lunch. They look up with raised eyebrows at the creature in front of them!
  16. As soon as youre finished auditioning, you look eagerly at the casting director hoping for an announcement You got the role subsequently leaving the room with a heavy heart and without saying thank you.  Cursing yourself, you could have done it better.

Check: If you slip into any of the above situations or habits and correct them if you have developed.

Remember

Being simple and creating audition from your TRUTH is the key to booking roles.
Good Luck for your next audition!

Grab Bollywood Roles! 8 Golden Rules on Acting for Camera

By on 5:44:00 AM
The golden rules to enter Bollywood
Acting for the camera
Acting for the camera

1. About Fear of Forgetting a Line

Don't get tense. A retake can always be taken. The director wants just one good take.

2. Don't Force a Character on Yourself. Find the Character in You

Don't forget "yourself". Think of the role  "you" are going to play.  In other words, shelves those parts of you that are not matched with those of a character. Study a character, look for traits matching in you and prepare your role accordingly. Making an effort to match every characteristic that of a character may lead to an unreal performance.

3. Bottom line of Each Scene

Find out something New about it everytime to keep the interest of viewers alive.

4. Don't Worry About Quality of Your Performance

You have taken a lot of pain to prepare yourself professionally. Just start confidently on "Action".

Use Physicalization

Viewers can measure you with two senses only out of five. These are "See" and "Hear". Therefore, physicalization  and voice is important to communicate, even subtle physical movements and a soft whisper. Use your entire acting instrument (whole body). However, avoid excessive physicalization especially with your face (particularly if it's "a close" shot).

5. Take Time to Cross Bridge From...

A. Between stimulus and response
Example: In a scene, your partner abuses you. You are replying  instantly because you know your partner's dialogues beforehand. This will look unreal and will be wrong. Here, "an abuse" by your partner is your "stimulus" to respond, with appropriate feelings. Listen, wait for 10 seconds for your mind to register, and then shoot your dialogue.
B. From one subject to another (shock, sudden happening, joke, another subject, slipping, dropping something)

6. Change Your Rhythm

Based on changes in script's dynamics (Read this post)

7. Don't Be Afraid.

A. Speak with authority, even when you know you are wrong eg  you have forgotten a word or a line. Just continue. Let the director decide what to do.
B. Avoid uncertainty or hesitation at any cost. It's a deadly sin

8. Fear and Tension

The only solution to fear and tension is pass "through it"!

How Aspiring Actors can Find Greedy and Cheats in Bollywood

By on 4:54:00 AM
Greedy and cheats
Greedy and Cheats

Modeling / Acting Scam

There are too many modeling, acting agencies and acting schools that dupe and fool on an aspiring model and actors dream to get entry into Bollywood or serials (TV episodes). These unscrupulous people post casting notices, auditions, guaranteed roles and ads on different websites like Quickr, Olx, and other free classified sites that refer to fake auditions and nonexistent castings for a break  that sound real. Some also use ads on the radio and newspapers to entice people.

Here Is Why They do This. To Extract Money!

Here are some of the examples

There are many agencies that operate very intelligently. They dont just come out and ask for money, they first get your confidence and screw  you in slowly. Often times, they schedule a fake audition (they dont ask for money here to put you at ease), then they call and tell you you have been short listed come in for a 2nd audition and sometimes a 3rd and meet a fake director or a producer. Once there, they tell you you are perfect but. This is where the salesperson kicks in and tries to lure you for a lead role in a feature film if you give a  deposit of Rs.1 to 2 lacs, which includes training  or some lesser ones will try to sell you on photos, portfolios, show reel, acting classes and anything else they can push on you. The audition was not actually for a real part in any production, it was to evaluate how much you will spend and how much they can sucker you out of.

My experience:

The girl Neeta from Lucknow phoned me for an advice. She applied with her photographs to an ad from so called a Doordarhan authorized agency for a new serial. She got an immediately that she has been selected and had to remit Rs.4000 for an artist card. Excited that her dream will now be fulfilled, she paid the amount. And she got the artist card (from a bogus company) within 10 days along with a note that now she has to come to Mumbai for finalization with Doordarshan producer and a training in a reputed school, therefore she should bring with her Rs. 47,000.
I warned her, as I found on investigation that it was a scam.

  • Some agencies / individuals involved are paid to get leads (i.e. Finding out people). Leads are people of a certain demographic especially girls and others, such as child, teen, man, etc. That has an interest, such as acting or modeling, that they can later exploit by way of email spam, telemarketing, etc. After you answer a fake casting, you will begin getting offers through email and sales pitches from telemarketers, all aimed at getting you hooked.
  • There is an acting school in X (name hidden) town. This school has a setting with Mumbai Casting directors (model and actor coordinators calling themselves now casting directors). The deal is that the casting director will arrange his students guaranteed roles when he sends them to Mumbai. In turn, the casting director will charge Rs. X from such students as his registration fee. Usually this casting director arranges roles of an extra like a waiter, watchman, lift man, a nurse standing with a tray behind doctor or a member of a wedding procession etc. Unfortunately, the students initially are happy that the school has kept its promise of a giving a break, but later are crestfallen when the same casting director doesnt help and they are on the road.

Heres How to Spot the Real Castings from the Fakes.

Remember, real casting directors will always want your portfolio, resume, show reel, and for modeling things such as height, weight, size, etc., through  filling a proper online form. Their registration charges, if any, are never hidden. Usually it is mentioned on their website. Their website will be authentic and not dubious. The site will mention database of models and actors and films, serials or ads where they're registered models and actors got assignments. Anything else should ring warning bells!

How to find out whether a website is genuine or fake?
Visit http://www.whoishostingthis.com/ and write URL of a particular website. You will find out- a Hosting provider, WHOIS, IP address and servers, which can further provide you more info

  1. Beware of anyone looking for new faces. Everyone has a new face! You can walk out your door and find dozens in a minute! The word new faces is a red flag for a scam.
  2. Beware of general needs such as any gender, ages 15 to 75? thats almost EVERYONE! Real castings have specific needs (with the exception of extras).
  3. Beware of no experience necessary in acting, dance and modeling, experience and training. Really, who is hiring actors who cant act or fashion models that cant walk? The only exception may be neighborhood fashion shows and student films.
  4. Beware of ads with large pay. Ads that read like models and actors needed for a highly reputed production house Rs 10,00 daily and assignment is 4 to 5 days
  5. Girls! Beware of anything that asks for lingerie, topless, etc, and request pics from you to be considered. Use your imagination on what someone will do with those. Real casting directors will want headshots, full body shot (clothed) and measurements and ask you to try on their clothing at the audition, once one is scheduled.
  6. Beware of webcam auditions, Skype auditions and the like from people you do not know. There have been many scams where ladies did those and were talked out of their clothing by people saying I need to see what you really look like and other lines. Those videos then get sold in other countries and end up all over the internet for others enjoyment.
  7. Beware of Extras casting calls. Generally, large productions go through a casting company. Anyone posting things like Extras needed to make scenes look real, Insert big movie name here pays Rs.2000 daily is a scam. Large productions in small cities will post notices, but in large cities, they already have all the extras needed, unless there is some specific needs the extras agency cant fill.
  8. Beware of anything that says call some number, casting agents are waiting. Casting directors look at headshots and resumes than call back who they like. They do not sit by a phone waiting for everyone and their mom to call without even knowing if they fit. Basically, they call you if they like you.

How to Protect Yourself as An Aspiring Model/Actor:

Get a new email account, with an anonymous username like ooloo 545839m, one for casting calls that you respond to. If you later that your reply is to a legitimate audition call, import that reply of yours to your main email account. Now you are safe, if your this anonymous email account is used by spammers or misused by others. You can always cancel is an email account without losing anything important.

Before Joining an Acting School, Wether Reputed or Not

  • Dont get carried away by publicity or name. In many instances, especially in the other towns than Mumbai, people take a famous name (Banner) as a franchisee and run school. In return, they pay for that well known school/ institute a monthly or annual franchise fee. Aspiring models and actors get carried away with the name and pay a hefty fee. Such schools have poor faculty and bad training.
  • Visit an acting school; find out who are the members of their  faculty, their background, a record of teaching and how much time they give to students. Do they focus on individual students? Go to such school on a day when the classes are getting over and talk to students and seek their views. Find out the names of the students from the school who and how many got a break and where? DONT pay anything before you have researched fully and found out everything!

Don't Tell Others! The Secret Tip for Bollywood Auditions

By on 4:47:00 AM
Don't Tell Others!
Only for you...secret revealed!
The auditions in India are different than those from abroad.
In India, initially the auditions are usually taken by so called casting directors or assistant director and rarely by a director who is a decision maker. In most cases, after the auditions, a tape is sent to the final authority, a director or producer who may shortlist the candidates and these actors may be called for a 2nd audition which is termed as a Call-Back. In other countries, the casting director who is taking your initial audition is the final deciding authority without much  interference by a director or a producer. Therefore, in India you must be prepared for repeated auditions and must be able to impress all auditioners at different levels to grab the role you are aspiring. Now, how to impress in repeated auditions by different people?

The Secret of Success in Auditions

Apart from other requirements in auditions, confidence is the most critical factor.
Its your body language, your voice, how you carry yourself, the image you project, before even open your mouth. Its those first 15 seconds of your audition as you are walking into the room. Your body language should say, Trust me. You got in me what you are looking for! and make the casting director, producers, directors, and show runners believe you, and feel like they can put you on the set or on stage the very next day. You are in top form for your performance, you have unshakeable confidence, and there isnt a doubt in anyones mind. Its the most attractive quality for an actor to have in an audition.

Which Type of Actors Fail in Auditions?

When an actor who is unsure of what they are doing and lacks confidence walks into the room. Their shoulders are low, they avoid eye contact, they are tentative in their choices, their voice is soft, and the paper having lines is shaking in their hands. It makes you look dull, and makes the casting director disinterested. Before you even open your mouth, your body language says,
Im sorry for the audition, maybe Im not suitable and you are about to see it
This is no good. If you dont believe in yourself, nobody else will.

Training

True confidence comes from trainingfrom the practice being in front of the camera and on stage. Its about being prepared, being confident in your work, and then entering into an audition room as a free bird, listening and letting your natural self-take over instantly.

Fake it!

If you dont have that confidence yet, you have to learn to fake it. You are an actor, right? Act like a confident person. What does that mean? It means walk in with your head high (even if you are nervous and shitting in your pants inside), look at the people in the room in the eye (not staring), breathe, and be fully prepared and with your audition.

Stop Your Hands Shaking

If you are the type of actor whose hands shake a lot when they are holding the paper, put something with a little weight to it underneath (your portfolio album or a diary). It will stop the shaking and make you surer of yourself. Let casting directors say to themselves, Wow, this guy isnt nervous at all!) That alone speaks volumes about you.

Listen Carefully

Desperation can be spotted a mile away. Never let them see you sweat, make awkward movements, breathe heavily or fumble The more you listen in the scene, the less self-aware you are, the more your body relaxes, the more connected you are physically and emotionally, and the better your audition is.

How to Remove Your Mental Block

For a moment forget audition. In your life, there are days when you feel miserable, and if you force yourself to smile, slowly you feel happier. Same goes with body language. Sit or stand confidently, ground yourself in the audition, put your shoulders back, avoid shifting the weight on your legs, breathe, look the auditioner or your actor partner right in the eye, and think to yourself Im going to give a Dubung performance!. I got this role. Remember, these kinds of auto-suggestions are great mood- changers and  will actually make you feel more confident. It should feel like you are having this great party, and you dont really care if anyone shows up, because you are so sure its going to be amazing.
Same goes for auditions. Dont be the guy thats begging people to come to your party. If they dont like your choices, too bad. They are missing out a great party guy.
Good Luck!

Hey Actor! Are You Thick Skinned Enough for Bollywood?

There are certain traits an actor has to possess to be successful.

  • A true, deep-seated love of acting is one of them.
  • Secondly, to follow dedicated and proactive efforts, followed by the knowledge of the fact that only you can make your career happenall this wrapped up with a teeth-gritting determination are bare minimum essentials for success.

However, one trait that we havent talked about enough is the necessity of possessing a thick skin.

It is absolutely crucial to have thick skinto an extent that ones success in show business truly depends on this. I cannot tell you how many times I have encountered or worked with actors and thought, Wow, this guy, so talented, but just doesn't have the stomach for this business.

  • Yes, get into your head once for all-this is a tough business not an easy pleasure game!!

These are often actors who need more hand-holding and cajoling who worry more about what people think, who spend hours on why they were not selected or brood about friends who they think never helped them.
I know some highly sensitive (thin-skinned) people have somehow managed to forge lasting careers in Bollywood for themselves, but in todays highly competitive environment where thousands of aspiring actors are struggling against each other, such thin skinned people are in minority.

Remember, When you make it as a known in the market actor or as a star," you open yourself up to even greater scrutiny". I have seen actors spoiling their career because of careless statements like why they hate XY or Z or behaving weird on social events or having an absurd and angry argument on a set.

  • The point is that if you dont have a thick skin, and when you get to some level of success, and you react or brood or leave in the middle of a shot, on smallest comment on your performance, things you hear about you from third sources, failures, rejections, then for sure you will NOT be going any further from this some level of success

  • Having thick skin truly does revolve around your ability to say screw you or go to hell in your mind about what others thinkeven if you look like an asshole or a joker...even if your closest and dearest friends say, Listen, when you did that thing, you really looked a total mismatch and like an idiot.
  • You need to be able to commit to yourself that whatever youve done (or are going to do) is best of your abilities and appropriate and let everyone else masturbate and enjoy their act judging you, calling you an uncultured, misfit, fool, calling you a talentless hack, calling you desperate, or seeking attention, or mentally defective.

One way to help develop thick skin is to regularly do things that take you out of your comfort zone.

For example

  • Start dancing freely alone and then in front of your friends. Let them comment on your mess up.
  • Do five minutes of stand-up comedy like Kapil Sharma, in spite of audience maintain a poker face.
  • Make friends while on Mumbai locals. Dont bother about getting a cold response.
  • Read joke books and share joke with friends and watch nobody laughing.
  • Do street plays and see people laughing at your miserable performance.

The best part about this exercise: the worse or shittier your performance in doing the above activities, faster you grow a thick skin. Why? Because youll probably see the looks of pain, sarcasm, horror, disgust, or pity that flit across peoples faces. And all those looks will be the result of something you did.

At the end of the day, youll realize that the worst responses to whatever youve done are when people dont respond at allwhen youre ignored or dismissed or treated like you dont exist. And those might be the moments when you develop the thickest skin.

How to Avoid Bad Headshots and Other Pictures in Your Portfolio

Selecting photographer

When looking for a photographer, DON'T base your decision solely on whom other people used (especially if they DON'T look like you) nor use a photographer based solely on the name. What might be awesome for other people might suck for you.

Dos and Donts

  1. With regards to looks, you DON'T want character shots, for example, literally dressing like a cop, doctor, etc. NO PROPS EITHER! This is an insult to the casting directors and will get you laughed out of this business.
  2. You want 3-5 GENERAL LOOKS that can suggest multiple roles or essences!
  3. For example, a business suit look can suggest, lawyer detective, secretary, business person, etc. A casual look (jeans and T-shirt) can suggest high school, college, blue collar. An upscale casual and brightly dressed look can suggest young parent, preppy, white collar, etc.
  4. These 3-5 looks you choose should be based on how you know you REALISTICALLY well. If you're a woman in your late 40s you're most likely not going to win dressing like a college student. If you're in your late teens or early 20s, a full business suit won't help you that much, maybe a slightly unbuttoned dress shirt and a trouser/ jeans...
  5. Have one, for auditions for commercial/ Ads. Its usually smiling and brighter colors. For film/TV, have one, which is usually a bit serious/intense expression and muted colors. Of course, there are exceptions to the rules.
  6. Your headshots need to look like you on any normal day!
  7. Do NOT wear makeup or style yourself in a fashion that would make you look too glamorous ie. As if you're trying to be sexy at a party or at a restaurant..
  8. It's important that your head and upper torso (from waist up to head) are clear so agents and casting directors can fairly judge you physically.
  9. In India, 5X7 or 4X6  is standard size. Not anything bigger or smaller may not be appreciated. Abroad, it is usually 8X10 sizes. Write your name, age, height and contact details on the back. In India, pasting resume at the back is usually not required.Ensure that ball pen ink should not smudge the photo paper at the back. Buy such a ball pen beforehand.
  10. Have either a white or black border surround your photo. The full bleed (no border) is also good and tacky.
  11. No glossy! Get matte or pearl finish (non glossy). Most indoor lighting tends to reflect off glossies making it difficult for the agents and casting directors to see.
  12. No busy patterns or jewelry that will take focus away from your face.

Tell your photographer to avoid

  • Too close shot. Don't get it cropped too close to where people can't see your body. At least your upper torso should be visible in your shots so CDs/Agents have a fair idea of what you look like physically.
  • Shooting you at weird angles, especially angles that would distort how you really look.
  • Silly poses. Head shots are supposed to be as natural as rain. Making stupid poses will just make you look stupider.

Such common inappropriate poses include-

  • Sitting on the table. This is where you're sitting down, but leaning WAY forward.
  • Oh my god, my head is too heavy!  Don't do a head shot where your hand is under your chin or even touching your head.

For Girls

  • Look at me, I have a sexy back! I've seen some headshots where people are in contorted (twist or bend out of the normal shape) poses, looking over his or her shoulder. It's not natural.
  • I'm a mermaid! This is where you're lying on your stomach with your feet up.
  • I got sexy legs! This where you're sitting down and your knees are visible.
