Success audition tips for Bollywood

Do You Know What Casting Directors Want From You?

Ever had an audition for a Bollywood film or a TV serial? If yes, then you knew you did pretty well? The one in which you were sure you nailed the role? All you had to do was wait for the call from the casting director confirming you have been selected.. But the call never came and you were left wondering what the heck went wrong?
I mean, you're a fantastic actor! Rather than leave you wondering what these crazy casting directors want, I had been consulting a few on-camera casting directors, took their opinion and based on my own experience as a character actor, here are the top things you MUST remember for your next on-camera audition!

1. Don't worry too much about remembering lines

No need to get tensed if you have not been able to memorize all your lines in that freaking short time! Casting directors don't care really much about that. What they expect is that you show the personality and behavior of the character. They know that the actor isn't going to be able to memorize the lines for an audition as he/she got the lines at the waiting room  may be 10 to 20 minutes back.

2. May ask questions -- but only relevant and if you really need to

Sometimes, good casting directors may ask  if you have any questions, it's only to help you get clarity if there's something in the script lines (sides) that's confusing. Very often the best auditions come from actors who just say 'no sir and just perform
Dont ask silly questions like kya mujhe role milega? (Am I going to be selected)? Sir, aap se mujhe kab call mile ga? (When I will get a call from you) or Im new and this is my first audition. Can you guide how should I do it? etc.

3. Listen and react

"The camera loves to watch you listen." says a top cinematographer cum director. If at audition, there is a co-actor or a reader (some assistant) for the other character, you make the other person  important, even if the reader isn't giving you back much. Don't be blank when the other guy is speaking the lines. The casting directors like to see the actor listen, think and respond

4. Be the best right the first time

You're not coming to an on-camera audition to get coached by a teacher. Come prepared (know who your character is, what you want, etc.). The guys in charge of the audition should not think maybe next time. They should think that they just saw your best the first time you did it. Don't be a next time actor."

5. Offer options, if asked

This means, you must be prepared to offer the  options of portraying a character. Casting directors love an actor that can take direction well. They are going to throw things at you to see how skilled you are.  For example, they may ask you to play a character in a different way, improvise a scene, speak faster or slower, say again with a different meaning, soften exaggerated gesture etc. You must be flexible to respond instantly.

6. Know what you look like on camera monitor

Camera acting skills always impresses casting directors. They like someone who knows how to do what they need to do with the camera on them.
Learn how to position your body and face so the best parts are seen in the right way and at the most important times. Practice a lot with your acting coach or do it on your mobile camera with the help of a friend and find out what everyone else sees. And just be critical.

7. Know where to look

Have you observed this?
When you are watching a television serial or a film the actors playing the characters are not looking into a camera (means not looking at viewers!). Dont look at the camera lens unless ask so. Maintain your eye lines. Look either at your partner-actor or reader or a few inches away from the camera. Let your eyes wander -- a little bit. Just don't look down. Lots of us look down to think.

8. You're a person first, actor second

People don't select actors. They hire people who can act. When it's a close competition-- and it often is -- sometimes hiring decisions have to do with the person as much as the performance.
So what does that mean? Personality. Personality. Personality.

Some more truth about auditions

  • Don't be surprised if there isn't a
  • Be nice to everyone -- the receptionist might be the casting director's sister. The director might look like an assistant.
  • Never complain about any issue
  • Never apologize -- we don't care if you're sorry you did a bad.
  • Never blame -- the person that didn't give you the script ahead of time might be the person hiring you, or a transport being late, was not well or had a late night etc.
  • Don't try to talk intimately with any one or cozily or gossip -- they hate that!
  • Don't look at them like they are about to put you in jail or going to perform a life threatening surgery -- they're nice people.
  • Be professional -- after all, it is a job interview.

Arshad Warsi as struggling actor
Arshad Warsi as struggling actor

Whether you're an actor, model, dancer, singer, musician, comedian, variety performer, or filmmaker, it's becoming increasingly important to have a video introduction or a demo reel available online to show off your skills.

Are you a beginner or don't have enough with experience with work (footage) for a video (Demo) reel (film) yet? No professional clips to post?

Don't worry; there are a lot of solutions available:

You could hire a service like of cinematographer, director, your acting coach or small production houses in Mumbai to shoot your self-introduction or a monologue.
Or even just borrow a friends camera, use your Web cam, or record yourself with the video camera on your phone. The video doesnt need to be long or complex.

Example of my Video Introduction as a character actor

How to?

  1. Keep it Simple
  2. Keep it limited to around 2 minutes
  3. Filming video from a professional source like a cinematographer, a production house for corporate films is preferred, but if you want to save money or have limited financial resources then...
A. The best option is to contact wedding videographers in Mumbai. Economical and good!

Here are some of them:

B. Or, just put yourself on tape using any camera you have available. If so then...

4. Make sure the room is quiet (good audio is important!), and ensure that you're nicely lit and framed in the shot.

5. Then say hello, state your name, and say a few words about yourself or your projects. If you'd like, you could also perform a monologue.
6. Then, upload your video to Vimeo or YouTube. (And add your audio clips to SoundCloud.)

How Beginner Actors Screw Up Acting Career | 6 Tips to Win

    By on 8:56:00 PM

    Lost everything?

Why every aspiring actor doesn't fail?
    Why are you failing?
Why others are getting a break in films and in TV serials?

To which category you belong to...

    1. Do you make things happen?
    2. You watch things happen?
    3. Wonder what has happened?

In 96% of the cases (survey by chitrapat s. asso ltd. 2014), it's the aspiring actor who is responsible for ruining his/ her acting career. There are numerous reasons which we have explained in other posts in this blog

    Stop signal

How Not to Quit After Repeated Failures

And so let's start with your dream to be an actor. That is, let's look at the real basics of the basics.  I am an old Olympian in this field, having been way past my age before taking my first coaching assignments. I write this as one who stumbled and fumbled and fooled by my friends and relatives who showered utterly false praise (as I realize now!) on my pictures, height, looks and being a party hero.
Never knew the level of frightening competition, professional acting, acting for camera, voice culture, good muscular body, the role of good computer and internet research ability, marketing and promotion, financial stability to name some of the few. However, I had a quality- persistence and perseverance, a burning desire to learn and never to give up.
So in the end, I won. Became a successful actor, a short filmmaker and an acting coach.

And hence this post to help young aspiring actor who just dream.

    SUGGESTED STEPS FOR THE NEWCOMER

    1. Self-examination

A vital question: Why do you want to act? The response of many was, "I don't know. It just always interested me."
My own answer: "I wanted to act all my life. Next question: What is your goal: Fame? Money? Performing?  Many said they just wanted fame and money like Salman Khan or Deepika Padkone. When they can be a Bollywood star, I can.
My own answer: A great actor like an international acting celebrity!.
Another question: How do you feel about the idea of performing in public or auditioning? If it terrifies you, then go back to question #1 and do some real soul-searching. Why? Because acting is something that almost always involves auditioning and performing in front of people. It occurs on a stage in front of an audience or in front of a camera with dozens of technicians around. Acting is in front of people! After asking and answering those questions, what then?

    2. What are the requirements to be a successful Bollywood actor and how to meet those requirements?

    What Should You Have?

    • Good looks may help you (especially in TV serials) though I don't agree fully with it. You can work on your looks or rather on your overall personality by facial exercises, Ayurveda treatments and yoga.
    • Good body and its maintenance.
    • Good voice. You can develop by various vocal exercises.
    • Very pleasant nature.
    • A graduate, good command on HINDI and an ability of a well spoken ENGLISH
    • Excellent ability to memorize and that too, quickly. This is of paramount importance, especially in serials where you get your lines just before the shot!
    • Good acting abilities. You can learn from this blog, from a good school, by joining our coaching  or online free help!
    • Good networking capabilities- building up contacts on line, off line with industry people.
    • The tremendous amount of patience, to be ready for a prolonged struggle and willingness to face periods of financial instability.
    • Emotional stability.

How should you develop the above Qualities in you?

    • Learn professional acting either by carefully selecting a good school or if in doubt, the best option could be a personal and professional acting coach
    • Join gym developing a good and HOT body
    • Improve your mental health and be strong. Join yoga classes to learn relaxation and mental balance
    • Make a professional portfolio of about 7 to 10 pictures to begin with, where you look exactly as you are. No dark glasses (Let casting directors see your eyes!).
    • Complete your graduation because it's a long struggle with financial instability. Being a graduate and having an additional skills like IT, Marketing, Teaching, etc. may help you to support financially to fulfill your dream to be an actor. Knowing spoken English well  helps you to network with cine industry and creates a favorable impression, apart from being comfortable with English dialogs in a film / TV serial
    • Start building your contacts in the industry by networking through creating and updating of your profile/ page on a regular basis on social sites, emailing your profile, monologues, your website and show reel.
    • Register yourself with at least 3 to 4 good coordinators (Select form posts in this blog)
    • Do not restrict your efforts only to one field, e.g. Bollywood films. Enter in modeling, TV serials, commercial ads and print. Just hit all opportunities available
    • Remember that acting is a business and you have to be a good businessman or a woman. You can't live in emptiness without money or with your parents/ relatives/ friends charity forever!
    • In a larger city like Mumbai, finding a coach or acting classes is not difficult. In a small town, it may be difficult. The problem is about honesty and integrity of such institutions, some of them becoming just a business houses. Therefore, you have to be careful.

    Whats the next step?

    3. Goal Setting and Action Plan

    • Set your goal - 5 years, then 4 years, 3, 2, 1 and then an action plan for this year, finally monthly weekly and daily objective and action plan
    • Monitor this goal and action plan otherwise your wasting your time and money. Forget being an actor. Go back!

I strongly feel that a brand-new adult actor should consider a personal coaching rather than taking a class--unless he can find a class composed solely of serious adult newcomers like himself--not dabblers or fun seeking rich youngsters. Being in a class with younger or experienced actors can be embarrassing and overwhelming. This is the most vulnerable stage in a newcomer's acting life. Avoid discouragement at this step.  Discouragement awaits us all, but hopefully by the time it hits we'll have enough confidence to not crumble. A newcomer's confidence level is notoriously low. So go the coaching route rather than the class route. There's less stress and more personal attention. Later, for networking, group practices, building contacts, and lots of other industry related information, you can join a good acting school.
In a small town, the way to start acting is in local theaters, cultural dramas and one act plays, festivals etc. If necessary, form your own group.

    4. What are the really basic necessities?

    A. One absolute necessity is knowledge of the vocabulary of acting.

For stage plays, you have to know Stage Right, Down Stage, upstage left, close-up, hit the mark, and... Action!
For Camera auditions for films, TV serials and commercial ads Apart from knowing, acting for camera, you should know slating, camera shots and angles like master shot, mid shot, close up. Extreme close up, establishing shot, dolly shot, blocking, props, eye lines, pack up or wrap up, cut, take, re-take, framing, camera cheating and many such relevant names.
Where to find such vocabulary of acting?
Search relevant posts in this blog. I have given everything
Search internet with a keyword- acting vocabulary or motion film vocabulary
Buy a book on Acting Vocabulary from amazon.in

    B. Second absolute necessity is long term financial stability

The acting career in Bollywood, TV serials or commercial ads is full of long periods of financial instability and unless you have the resources to maintain yourself for a long period, you will get frustrated, handicapped and may start thinking to quit!
For aspiring actors with limited financial resources, my strong advice is to become a working actor. Take up a job, may be on a part time basis or a night job as at the International airport in Mumbai, or in a restaurant / hotel or working on an online job on the computer.

    5. Working with the material

Another "must" for an adult newcomer is to start working on material (script, lines, character) immediately. The most basic acting requirement is the ability to say a line and sound real. It's hard to imagine an audition or a scene without having to speak. And his /her potential to sound real when he / she says a line is precisely what all beginning actors must discover. This is BASIC.

Warning! If you cannot learn to sound and act real, then acting is not for you.

    6. The Power of Imagination

The thing which separates a good and successful actor from a mediocre one is The Power of Imagination. Develop the habit of visiting places and observing things (people, plants, animals, things, behavior) regularly. Create stories around them and play. Imagine and create stories from words or things. Recollect your own memories from the past

To summarize, if you are an adult who has always wanted to act, begin either with coaching sessions from a personal coach or from a good school After several lessons you can then decide, based on an intelligent assessment of your potential and an honest evaluation by your school teacher or your personal coach, if you want to spend the next several years following your dream.

Wanna Make Your Bollywood Dreams Come True?

They are known as casting directors or star makers who are responsible for selecting or short listing actors for specific characters from the script of a film, TV serial or commercial ad.
Now a day, these guys are highly talented  and play a significant role in the film making process by helping to identify good actors with whom largely depends the success of a film, a serial or a commercial ad. New successful actors like Ranveer Singh and Parineeti Chopra vouch for the vision and talent of these casting directors.

    What to Expect?

When you're called in for an acting audition, the people present at the audition will include you, the casting director, and maybe a handful of other complete strangers. Some of these other people may be the producer, a camera operator (if they're taping the auditions), the casting director's bored friend or relative, a representative from the advertiser (in the case of a commercial audition), or a dance choreographer or musical director (in the case of a musical).

By the time it's your turn to audition, the casting director has probably seen hundreds of other people ahead of you, which means the casting director and anyone else in the room is likely to be tired, bored, and irritable. Make the director's job easy and you increase your chances of having a successful audition. Make the job harder (by not being ready, talking too much, and so on) and you may seriously kill any chances of getting any role.

    Take care! Top 3 Tips!

    1. Memorize your line perfectly

To an extent that you don't have to think about lines anymore.

    2. Mind your  auditioning manners

A lack of courtesy shows disrespect, no matter where you are in life
Never touch the casting director or any of his or her possessions, such as the notepad, laptop computer, food, and such. Doing so is rude and definitely works against you.

    3. How to enter and exit

Enter smiling. Mildly nod or  wish elegantly
Complete your performance, wait for about half or a minute, listen if they give any comment or instructions, nod smilingly, thank them and leave elegantly.
Well, this is in a nutshell.

Here are 7 of the top most casting directors of Bollywood who have become a celebrity in their own right with their right actor pick up ability:

    1. Shanoo Sharma

Star finds: Ranveer Singh, Parineeti Chopra, Arjun Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, Bhumi Pednekar

Arguably the biggest name in the casting circuit of Bollywood, Shanoo Sharma is the casting director of Yash Raj Films and has blockbusters like Dhoom 3, Jab Tak Hai Jaan,Ek Tha Tiger, My Name is Khan, Band Baja Baaraat etc to her credit. Sharma's big break came in the form of Karan Johar's 2009 thriller Kurbaan which got her noticed after she handled a celebrity star cast beautifully.
A decade into the business, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor are considered to be her biggest draws and the young stars have publicly gone on record to say that they owe their careers to Shanoo!

    2. Atul Mongia

It was his interest in film making that eventually helped Mongia cast and deal with actors better. Post his teaching stint at the renowned Barry John School of Acting in New Delhi, Atul moved to Mumbai and got busy training actors for Dibakar Banerjee's relatively fresh cast in Love Sex Aur Dhoka. And that's how he was handed over the responsibility of finding actors for films.

    4. Mukesh Chhabra

Star finds: Rajkummar Rao, Sushant Singh Rajput and Amit Sadh

A casting director by a stroke of luck, Mukesh Chhabra, also lovingly known as Casting Chhabra, is another name deeply respected in the industry. His journey, which began accidentally by casually helping Vishal Bhardwaj cast kids, saw him eventually launch big names like Rajkummar Rao, Sushant Singh Rajput and Amit Sadh.
Chhabra got his first big break with Imtiaz Ali's Love Aaj Kal but it was his immaculate casting in Anurag Kashyap's Gangs Of Wasseypur that made him a name to reckon with. Presently casting for Aamir Khan's upcoming wrestling film Dangal, Chhabra has no reservations in helping his friends within the industry with casting.

    5. Honey Trehan

Another theatre product from Delhi, Honey Trehan worked as a stage director in New Delhi. However, his chance meeting with Vishal Bhardwaj in Mumbai changed the course of his career. Trehan worked as an assistant director in Bhardwaj's Makdee and later showed interest in getting actors for Bhardwaj's movies. That is how Maqbool, Omkaraand Kaminey happened and there was no looking back for Trehan.
Trehan's first independent assignment was Aamir Khan's production, Delhi Belly. However, it was his dream to cast for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Ritesh Sidhwani, which also happened with the time. Today, Trehan is content with the way his career has shaped up and feels there is plenty of scope for casting directors in the industry

    6. Vicky Sidana

Star finds: Kartik Tiwari, Divyendu Sharma and Rayo Bakhrita

Vicky Sidana struck gold after his casting for Pyaar Ka Punchnama hit the bull's eye! While life got tedious after the movie, the challenges of his job have always excited him. Sidana has been a part of marathon auditioning processes to filter people for Special 26and Pyaar Ka Punchnama and has only gotten better. And with Bodyguard and Baby also to his credit, Sidana has rapidly found a footing in the industry.

    7. Nandini Shrikent

It was her internship with Govind Nihlani on Takshak which changed the course of her career.
Nandini got her first big break when she got a chance doing the casting for LakshyaHowever, her very first assignment was more of a challenge for Shrikent when she was asked to cast 72 actors to fit Lakshya's war set-up. However, her performance in Lakshya ensured that there was no looking back. Her next few projects, Luck by Chance , Rock On!!,  Life of Pi, Student of the Year and most recently, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani established her as a name to reckon with.

Are you Nervous at Auditions? 5 Solutions by Top Directors

    By on 3:17:00 AM
    A typical film audition scene
    A typical film audition scene

A typical audition scene in a Bollywood film or TV audition:

Fierce competition! A long queue of hundreds for a single role in audition! Hell! Everyone is looking better than me! My chances are poor! What to do?

This is a common experience of many, especially new actors. They enter the audition room with a scared face with sweat trickling down the neck.
The result is disastrous. In nutshell, this nervousness just screws up all your efforts and preparation.
Stress and anxiety are factors that an actor has to deal with when they audition for a part. But its important that an actor knows what to do with their nervousness so it doesnt prevent them from getting what they want.
Based on my own experience and the recommendations of top casting directors, here are 5 invaluable techniques as solutions to fight nervousness and anxiety

    1. Stop Negative Thoughts. Take a break.

Sometimes an actor gets stressed out before they have to perform. When this happens, a person must give an auto suggestion with Saying Stop to self, should take a deep breath, say Im confident, Ill do the best, just smile for self and try to find something to do for a few minutes to get their mind off of the problem. A person could take a walk, listen to some music, read the newspaper, or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things before auditioning for a part.

    2. Read motivating quotes, something uplifting your mood.

A technique that is very helpful is to have a small notebook of positive quotes; statements that make you feel good. Whenever you come across a motivational quote, being positive in life, statements by great Hollywood or Bollywood actors, how to manage anxiety, etc., write it down in a small notebook that you can carry around with you in your pocket. Whenever you feel depressed or frustrated, open up your notebook and read those statements. This will help to manage your negative thinking before going on stage or set.

    3. Visualize the audition scene before and practice.

Sometimes we can get anxious over an upcoming audition just for the heck of it or perhaps because we dont know anything about it.
    There are 2 options:
If possible, visit the place before a day and try to inquire about it. If its a casting directors office try to meet few concerned people. This will help you to reach at the audition place without hassles on time on the day and mentally you may be in a relaxed mood.
Before the big day comes, imagine yourself doing the audition using your mind. By doing this, you will be better prepared to perform for real when the time comes. Self-visualization is a great way to reduce the fear and stress of a coming situation.

    4. Worrying only makes things worse.

A lot of times, our worrying can make the problem even worse. All the worrying in the world will not change anything. All you can do is to do your best each day, hope for the best, and if something does not work out, learn to take it in stride. Just say to yourself If they dont select me, the loss is theirss. They lost a good actor for their film. Hahaha

    5. Take help.

Take advantage of the help that is available around you if you get really anxious in your auditions. If possible, talk to your school teacher or a professional acting coach who can help you manage your depression and anxieties. They will be able to provide you with additional advice and insights on how to deal with your current problem. By talking to a professional, a person will be helping themselves in the long run because they will become better able to deal with their problems in the future. Remember that it never hurts to ask for help.

Why Most Actors Fail in Audtions, and Films | Solutions

    By on 5:26:00 AM

Famous Director Mira Nair points on actor's performance
Famous Director Mira Nair points on actor's performance

    1. Why average actors fail in auditions and enacting a scene

They just memorize lines and just act. In their efforts to play a character they struggle and the moment they try hard, it looks fake. 90 auditioning actors out of 100 in the line do this and fail.
The moment a casting director says Do it in a different way or kuch aur tarike se kar ke dhikaye, they just speak with a different volume or speed and fail. They cannot create a different character or play different emotions or attitudes. Their voice, gestures and movements remain the same.
The result is that a casting director in an audition or a director in a scene gets irritated and fed up seeing the same lackluster performance again and again in majority of actors.

     2. Why this happens?

As an individual you have your own unique personality-your voice, gestures, physical movement style, looks, expressions and a fixed attitude (shy, aggressive, positive, negative, suspicious etc).
Do you know who you are? Your personality and habits? If a page or a slate is full, how can you write anything new on it? The same is when you portray a character, a new life.

Your biggest enemy is your own self. Your fixed personality. Unless you free yourself with your self and make yourself Blank, you cannot bring a new life, a character in you. This requires you to be AWARE of yourself, for example, how you stand, your walk, any hand gesture, the way you nod, your head while talking, your  looking habits, an peculiar walk of yourself, your voice (speed, diction, quality), mental makeup (nervous, confident, shy?) etc. Once you become a blank personality, it will be easy to be in a new created character and be ready with options. Your own profile will not come in the way to portray a new life.

Who creates a character for you?

    • A casting director or a director in a film has no time in helping you to create a character. They expect you to do this. Perhaps you may be told briefly by your coordinator or a guy from direction dept. Therefore, you have to create.
    • Do you know this? How can you create a character unless you have analyzed the script (or your lines) like objective and how your character helps in achieving the objective of the story? What are the options of physical, mental and social profile of a character?
    • Once you have decided options, learn and practice and practice. Then decide the best option. Apart from the fact that you are ready now, this will bring in A GREAT CONFIDENCE in you

    4. What really can help an actor to develop a character?

    Imagination

-There are certain things that all great actors share: talent, dedication, and courage, to name a few. Another thing I have found that many great actors who Ive known over the years is the passion of a rich and vibrant imagination.
Using your imagination is a wonderful, creative exercise. It is essential for you as an artist to recognize and cultivate the part of the brain that sees beyond what you see and is able to create a different world around you. Like any other muscle, you need to work it out so it stays alive and strong.
The easiest way to do so is to combine imagination with observation. Unfortunately,  our powers of observation can get a little rusty given the pace at which we live and the amount of things we have to distract us. In Mumbai, we run the risk of being further distracted and isolated by the time we spend in running around meeting coordinators, casting directors, going for auditions and other social activities. So, its a good idea to set aside time to be out in public. Take yourself out to a museum, garden, local railway platforms, bus stops, and the zoo or on beaches, be still, and look around. Pick a person. Let your imagination run wild and create some new worlds. It is essential that you dream and create back and future story of the person, animal or anything. Dont bother whether its true or not
For example, you could pick a person and watch them closely. Notice all of the details of what theyre wearing: their hair, the pitch of their voice, their laugh, etc. Now, imagine where they would live. House or apartment? How is it furnished? Are there a picture of people in the living room? If so, who are they? What job does this person have? Do they like it? What kind of money do they make? Are they comfortable or do they need more? Are they lonely or do they want more time alone? What do they dream of at night? What do they long for? And on and on as many questions you can think of asking until that person comes alive for you in a specific, real, and heartfelt way. Now, do it again and again until your eyes and ears are razor sharp from observing and your brain aches a bit from the exertion of all of your imagining.
What a wonderful way to spend a morning, afternoon, or evening, and what good you have done your creative soul and brain! When you take the time to wonder what life is like for others in this detailed way, you are expanding the parameters of your own imagination, and there are so many ways that an active and well-oiled imagination can help your work. Your concentration is improved, your focus is laser sharp, and all of your decisions are more specific.
Next time you get a scene or character that youre having trouble portraying,  you can remember how great fun it was to imagine someone elses life and you do the same for the character and  when you speak the dialogue youll feel energized and excited, ready to show stunning possibilities of the role to thrill a casting director or a director instead of being frustrated by your limitations.
    Imagine that!

7 Tips to Express on Camera without Dialogs to be a Star

    By on 7:39:00 PM

Great nonverbal communication on camera by a great actor
Great nonverbal (silent no dialog) communication on camera by a great actor

    Non Verbal Communication

Conveying your reactions, views, thoughts, emotions and attitudes without dialogs in the front of a camera is called as a superior acting technique of "Non Verbal Communication", a hallmark of great actors.

Should  aspiring actors  to be a successful learn this technique?

The answer is a BIG yes.

Communicating silently in front of a camera makes up anywhere from 60-70 percent of our communication. An audition requiring only a reaction from you brings it to 100 percent. Since we are in the acting (communication business), it makes sense that all actors master this nonverbal, the language of silence
To be successful in auditions and give a stunning performance in a scene, remember my words Its what youre not saying within the silence that often speaks the loudest.

    A. A slight clamping and lifting of the corner of the lip can send a message of disagreement, contempt or criticism.
    B. The rate of blinking can suggest interest, hostility, or distress. Your scent, what youre wearing, and your posture are all sending messages and are interpreted by casting. Its this nonverbal information that differentiates the skilled actor from the unskilled or unprepared.

In an acting technique, the nonverbal information we send out through our body, voice, face, and appearance is called nonverbal behaviors. Such nonverbal behaviors spring from our attitudes, cultural upbringing, and our reactions to things we consider important in our interest (or in a characters interest) to communicate either in a positive or negative way.

The following is a quick overview of 7 types of unspoken communication and behaviors that you can use, after analyzing a script and creating a character for your next audition or for actual filming of a scene.

    1. Your face

The majority of your silent communication will come from your facial expressions.
    A. Some facial expressions are just random muscle movement without meaning and only serve to confuse the viewer. However, facial expressions associated with surprise, fear, happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, and contempt are universally recognized.
    B. Practice 9 emotions and if used appropriately, they inform the viewer what you are feeling at any given moment. Some facial reactions are also used for punctuating words or phrases, such as raising your eyebrows to comment on how big something really was.

Use parts of your face like forehead, eyebrows, nostrils, lips, twitching of a facial muscle, clenching of teeth, subtle shaking of the head to communicate yourself well without dialogs

    2 Your eyes

Looking, staring, and blinking, is an important nonverbal reaction. When an actor in a scene faces people or things that they like, the rate of blinking increases. On the other hand, when angered, the gaze gets harder and the blink rate will decrease or stop completely. An increase in the blink rate for no apparent reason sends a clear message that you are either not prepared, not connected, or experiencing high anxiety

    3. Using your hands

Movements that express some kind of thought or process of thinking are called gestures. Some gestures occur with speech, such as using your fingers when counting out loud or perhaps to emphasize a word or phrase.
Recollect how a politician, a public speaker, trainers or a good TV anchor uses his/ her hands. I would strongly suggest observing foreign TV speakers. Gestures are expressed primarily with your hands, however, can occur in the head, body, or even your face. This may include nodding your head yes, a shoulder shrug implying that you dont know, or a wink of the eye suggesting secretor "I'm lying"

    4. Your body

Unlike facial expressions, body language doesnt tell viewers what emotion youre feeling, but rather, how well youre (a character is) reacting, responding and coping with the emotion he/she has felt after hearing something.
Things that we find frightening or distasteful, we tend to move away from. Heavy swallowing or licking your lips, touching your hair or sprawling out on a couch can be signs of stress, interest, or feelings of superiority.

    5. Keeping space (Distance)

The amount of space you or your character needs is influenced by a number of factors including social norms like
Relationship with people or the items in a set: The distance you maintain with a co actor or a thing in a scene would depend on factors like a particular situation, personality characteristics, and level of familiarity. For example, just a slight moving in towards your partner, reader, or the camera can enhance intimacy. A big boss may maintain a formal distance with a subordinate rather than a drunken close friend at a party.
    6. Your touch. Communicating through touch is an important nonverbal behavioral cue to think about. Touch can be used by a good actor to communicate a range of information and feelings such as affection, familiarity, sympathy, desire, etc.

    7. Your look

The choice of color, clothing, hairstyles, and other factors affecting how you look fall under the category of appearance.  Your appearance as a character can also change scene partner or viewers reactions, judgments, and conclusions.  Think of an appearance of a gangster, policeman, businessman, college girl.
In our real life, how do we judge people? Just think of all the opinions, judgments we quickly make about someone based on his or her appearance.
Remember!  The first impression you make in your audition is important and lasting.
As a good actor, its how you react to an event or situationyour attitude or behavior under certain circumstances, like when there are no dialogsmakes your performance memorable.

    A sure success formula?

When chosen (from the above 7 ones) and prepared correctly into your audition, or into a filming of a scene can bring more depth, colors, and meaning to your actions, reactions, and the words you dont speak.

10 Ways to be a Bollywood Actor Without Experience | Money

    By on 6:23:00 PM

    Dreams and Realities
    Dreams and Realities

Dreams and Realities of aspiring actors
Dreams and Realities of aspiring actors

"It was my dream to be a Bollywood and TV Serial Actor. I'm handsome and tall, beautiful and  hot. So, I forced my parents to give me money, came to Mumbai. It's 2 years now. I'm totally depressed. I have lost all money, living place, friends deserted me. Nobody here in Mumbai to help me. ?? Mujhe ??? Karo ????? Sir, please help... Help... Please... Please sir!!!"
This is a common email request I receive. I understand their situation and try to help them as far as possible. However, what's the final solution?
Many aspiring actors who are just about to start a career in Bollywood, TV serials or Commercial ads are confused how to get a break
-When you dont have anything on your acting resume like experience, monologue or show reel of clips of your films.
-With a middle or lower middle class background

I can see how this tricky situation can be confusing to many, particularly to those who just dream and have an attitude of-
Actor Banne Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega
And go out paying for portfolio Rs. 25,000, join some famous acting school Paying Rs 2 Lakhs with no post training help from that Famous School and jump straight into the industry without knowing the rules and requirements to be a successful actor.
For those dreamers who have financial constraints and have come from a smaller place to Mumbai, trying to fulfill their dreams is a shocking experience resulting into going back home as a broken man/ woman or those who manage to stay in Mumbai, land up doing menial jobs or forced to take up dubious or even illegal activities

Well, Im not here to discourage you. Get this straight. On the contrary, to tell you how to make success without any experience and small money.

First, the good news: obviously you CAN become an actor with no experience. Everybody has to start somewhere. The key is actually taking action and doing something in order to get that experience.

You dont have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

Here are some sure ways how to become an actor with no experience, when and where to start your acting career.
Once youve decided that you want to pursue a career in acting, youll need a good plan of action on how to become an actor with no experience.

    1. Planning the Top Pririty

To plan you MUST have a solid knowledge and information on Cine, TV and commercial industry in our country. Remember, to be an actor is a Business. Get this into your head once for all.

Requirements to be a successful actor in Bollywood, TV or in Commercial ads

    •  Self-analysis (SWOT) to judge whether you meet the requirements and what you have to do if you lack in any of the requirements

How to get knowledge and information?

    • Online from Internet: Just research, research and research for hours, days and months before you jump or leave your town for Mayanagri-Mumbai!
    • If you do not know how to use computer to surf and find out information, either you learn NOW or forget to be an actor
    • Read acting blogs (For example, this blog which has more than 200 posts). I strongly suggest reading good international acting resource websites like http://www.backstage.com/ and others.
    • Check and learn from free acting videos from YouTube

    2. Set your goal

For example, to be a successful TV or Bollywood or a model cum actor in 3 or 5 years with monthly earnings of  Rs. 50,000

Plan of Action and Sub goals:

Money required monthly to maintain you in Mumbai during the struggle period (for portfolio registration+ housing+ transport+ food etc.)
If you cant arrange money, no problem. There are ways to become a successful actor without a lot of money.
Firstly, dont move from your town to Mumbai. Get the experience of plays, theater road shows or write your own 2 to 5 minute story script, shoot films on mobile with your friends near your house, garden, road and upload them on YouTube or Vimeo. Thats it! You have experience NOW!

In Mumbai, go to industry hang out places (Read our relevant post) in Andheri West, Goregaon and other nearby places and contact people. You got to be a great go getter and a true extrovert. Get the necessary information from other actors hanging around there.

    3. How to  Get Experience?

Go to film training institutes like ZIMA, Digital Academy in Mumbai and contact student directors who would need aspiring actors for their diploma films. They welcome any actor who meets the character of their film. And wow! You have an experience without spending a Rupee!
Try theater in Mumbai. Make a habit of hanging around in the coffee shop of  Prithvi Theatre in Juhu or regularly read a Mumbai Theater guide or shows, acting workshops and other activities at NCPA Nariman Point (Check their website regularly). Be ready to act in any of the plays held at NCPA. There are other places apart these. Search, search and move your feet!
One of the quickest ways is to find out where the different serials on TV are being filmed. For example, start visiting studios like Gemini, Mahboob studio in Bandra or where CID, Savdhan India episodes are being filmed. Get the list of studios and production houses through this blog or on
    http://www.justdial.com/Mumbai/Casting-Directors/ct-1061732536.
While on a shoot, contact someone from the production dept. And tell him you are an actor and need a role, even a small one.

    4. Read and study

First of all, you need to familiarize yourself with the industry. Know the ins and outs of this business, how it works and what people are involved in it. Reading relevant posts from this blog, talent coordinators and so forth will give you the confidence and understanding of where you want to be, and how youre going to get there.
Not only that, but reading a lot will benefit any actors craft as well. Read books mentioned in the left side bar of this blog. Just click on a book, go to amazonin and buy books one by one through your credit/ debit card. Dont have a debit/credit card? Must have if you want to be an actor, maybe with only Rs. 5000 in a bank!

When youre trying to find the best ways on how to become an actor with no experience and little money, self-education is priceless.

    5. Dont leave your city right away to Mumbai

As an aspiring actor whos just starting out, your town will probably have small-time theater, plays, social and religious functions where you can create your own small group of performing arts, create plays and perform, including road shows on social issues like-
Public health, adult education, saving water and electricity.
However, remember, your every such activity MUST be filmed on video / mobile camera and promoted on YouTube or similar ones. This would be absolutely GREAT for getting experience, because this could be possible and easier.

Bollywood and TV serials in Mumbai not only very competitive, but  also very expensive.

Dont move to a big city as soon as you decided you want to be an actor. You need to check whether this is simply an impulsive decision, or you actually enjoy the craft and have the resources to do this for a long period of time. Try to bite off as much as possible in your small town and start building your experience and acting resume.

    6. Move slowly

Continuing my point from the above, your goal must be to move slowly, rather than rush into anything. Remember the famous phrase:

Acting is a marathon, not a sprint.

This cannot be more true. Anybody who rushes into this profession will burn out very quickly. Its not a smart way to approach this business.

    7. Work on your special skills

Being a good actor should always be your main priority. But that doesnt mean you cant learn any accessory skills that will help you GRAB more acting opportunities.

Many actors completely ignore this part, and therefore take themselves out of running the race.

Many a times a selection of an actor may depend on additional skills he/she possesses, when many actors are initially shortlisted for a role.
For example, singing and lip-sync, playing some musical instrument, dancing, martial arts, miming, horse riding, biking stunts to name some of the few. Its always helpful to be able to do something more than acting that a director can use in the film

Perfect! Develop  those skills, put them on the resume and see how this can help you with gaining that acting experience.

What more should you be learning? Anything, really.

Juggling, Languages and different accents of Indian languages, different types of walks, postures, laughs, crying,  magic and whatnot.

Try some of the unusual things and put those on your resume, particularly if you already do them. Special skills arent the focal point of your resume (which is why theyre usually at the very bottom), but who knows, one day, one of those skills may win you a significant role in a big production.

    8. Start working on your marketing

When you have no acting experience  and not running around for auditions, you have time.
I suggest to start working on your marketing and creating your brand as Mr. Best Actor. Initially perhaps it may not do good but once you have that acting experience, you can update periodically will be ahead of many other actors who are just catching up with their actor marketing goals.

So what can you do to start building a brand around yourself?

Build your own personal acting website (or you can pay someone to do it for you, but its not worth it). Try building it on free http://weebly.com
Learn to promote this website vigorously online.
-Create social media profiles: Facebook (page and not only profile), Twitter, Instragram and whatever else is out there. Make connections online with other actors, directors, producers, screenwriters and industry people.

    9. Welcome  Rejections

Rejection is a part of this business. A big part, actually. Many budding artists do not expect this, but unfortunately, thats the reality of show business everybody gets rejected.
Unlike in other walks of life, you have to accept that Rejection (with capital R) is completely normal.

    Chaplin

Actors search for rejection. If they dont get it, they reject themselves.

    Charlie Chaplin

At this point, dont go out there to win. Go out there to FAIL. Do your best, experiment, play and enjoy the process. As an actor, you cannot try to avoid failure, ever.

    10. Be Patient and Consistent

For months and years! Many top Bollywood stars have worked patients for years and years before they had a success.

Their success mantra? "I never give up"
